I am not asking if it is good or bad, that is all relative. What I am asking is can anybody describe if it is sweet? bitter? no flavor.....?

Pumpernickel flour is whole rye flour (it is coarser than regular rye flour and includes all of the grain), so it will taste like rye. The flavor, however, most people associate with rye bread is actually caraway seeds. Most pumpernickel does have some caraway, but less than rye bread--so the flavor is somewhat milder. Pumpernickel also has several other ingredients like caramel syrup and coffee to turn it dark. I personally prefer pumpernickel because it is milder.

It does sort of taste like rye bread, but with rye bread, it is flavorful and then you have to extra flavorful bits from the caraway seeds, but with the pumpernickel, it is more flavorful throughout, evenly.

In my opinion pumpernickle is the worst thing that could have been made on this earth. I tasted one bite 45 years ago. I am 58 years old and I can still taste that bite of pumpernickle bread everytime I hear the word pumernickle. It's so bad it must have implanted itself in one of my tastebuds. That's probably the reason I can taste it everytime I hear the word. So save yourself from tasteing pumpernickle bread for the rest of your life. Leave it on the store shelf.

Pumpernickle bread has one of those tastes that is hard to describe . When I first heard of it I thought it sounds gross but when I tasted it , well that was it .I went and bought a whole unsliced loaf with as strange as it may sound, spinach dip.
Take a chunk of the bread and dip it in the dip and I allmost ate the whole thing , I loved it. try it and see for yourself.

It is a rye but darker. The American type is different than the German which is smother and denser and sliced thin. I like the lighter rye for sandwiches. Try both.

it does not taste bitter-why don't you just buy a loaf or a pumpernickel bagel and taste it for yourself...what it tastes like to me may not taste the same to you...
