So I worked at a hunting ranch in south texas for a month during my winter break this year and it was high fenced but about 30000 acres. And when the feeder went off (for a ridiculus 15 seconds) the same big bucks would show up at the same feeder everyday at the same time, and would stand there even after i shot a couple does. now that was ridiculus and maybe unethicle! But where ive grown up hunting in Central Texas it seems as the Bucks there are smarter, we have never killed a big mature buck at a feeder. they just wont go! but what it does accomplish is keeping the does coming to the feeder which may have a buck with her that stays back, which gives us at least a chance. to me this is not unethicle, am i wrong? why? and am i spelling ethicle right?

Ethical: e-t-h-i-c-a-l. Feeding deer is a technique common in Texas because Texas has very little public hunting land. This technique is only used on private land. Look at it this way, it is like baiting a hook when you go fishing. And what do you do with a fish that is too small? You release him. What do you do when you see a doe or an undesirable buck at a deer feeder? You let him go.

And you are right. The big bucks, the survivors, hang back just out of sight of the hunter.

The only people who think this hunting technique is unethical are non-hunters and wannabees (who only say they're too good at hunting to resort to feeders but who in reality have never hunted deer). Truth is, you still have to be a good enough shot to take your deer. First sound and your buck will be in the next county. You miss and your shot will spook every deer within a mile for the next half-hour.

I hunt on less than 150 acres. My neighbors have THOUSANDS of acres. My neighbors FEED deer corn ALL YEAR ROUND. What are my chances of snagging a deer if I don't feed? Nil, zilch, zero!
Do I use feeders? Yeah, when I remember to fill them with corn.

I agree with Rambo. I don't believe in hunting over bait, or using dogs.I believe in "Fair Chase" hunting. That means doing your homework, like scouting the area you are going to hunt, finding the trails and the browse, the bedding areas, the escape routs that the deer might use if spooked, looking for rubs and scrapes, then finally choosing the best place to put your stand. If you get a deer that's fine, if not? Oh well, that's why it's called hunting and not killing.
Hunting is like a chess game, your wits against the deer's. Sometimes you win, sometimes the deer wins, mostly the deer wins. In those rare occasions that you do get a deer ? It makes it that much more enjoyable, knowing that you did your homework and that everything fell into place to take a great animal. You don't and never will get that same feeling sitting over bait or next to a feeder.

I do use a feeder, but not to hunt off of.
Where the feeders are is considered a dead zone, and no hunting is allow there.
I use the feeders to supplement the native food supply.
When the weather gets bad I increase the feed out put.
My feeding is to attract more deer to my land and hold them there.

I like the challenge of a one on one with the bucks.
But usually during hunting season I cut down the feed dispensed each day unless drought has limited the mass crop or extreme foul weather sets in and then I increase the food to off set for the conditions.
On good years I don’t feed that much during the hunting season, but before and after I feed a lot out to help encourage the deer to stay on my property.

To shoot over or close to a feeder takes no skill.

Ethics is fair chase, it’s the work and skill to get in contact and stay in contact with the buck.
Deer hunting is not about killing, its about beating the buck on his on turf or getting beat by the buck.
It about trying to second guessing how he will react to the weather changes, moon, wind and the presence of man in his habitat.

If you were to train a cow to come to the sound of a bell, and then you up and shoot it one day, what did you accomplish other then shooting a trained cow.

Ethics is fair chase, and the animal has more of a chance of beating you then you of beating him.
The Ethical hunter when he first stats hunting gets beat a lot at first then he learns how to play the game and turn the odds to his favor, but some years he still gets beat by the old bucks.

To shoot over a feeder is no different then having some one tie a deer up to a post and you go out and shoot it, that not hunting that just shooting deer.

That my opinion.

I'm a hunter. I don't feel it's right to ply the deer with food then shoot them. That's just plain stupid. What kind of man would actually call himself a hunter by doing this. I see it as lame. Sorry. There's a 12 point buck that comes to my feeder during season. He's as safe as if God held him in his own hands. So are the other 5-6. Even if it was the last hour of the last day of the season and I hadn't got one, I wouldn't shoot one. To me that's just not right and shouldn't be done. And don't even think for a minute that when I come in from being out all day and haven't seen one and come home to see 6 standing in my yard that I don't get mad and aggravated. I tell them "you're all stupid" and go in to eat a hamburger.
Does are better eating meat anyway. And it's "ethical and unethical".

I do not think hunting feeders are unethical.

However, I still don't understand why anyone would enjoy killing a deer that has been baited to a feeder. I personally would not get any enjoyment from sitting next to a feeder and shooting at deer coming to feed.

What I love about hunting is the thrill of killing a deer in their natural habit. That's hunting to me. No, you probably won't see as many deer as you would sitting next to a feeder. But when you do kill a deer, you get a sense of accomplishment.

I don't understand how you can get satisfaction from killing an animal that is being baited. It is like killing raccoons that you know will come to your garbage at night. It is like killing a pet, not a wild animal.

It's ethical. I use feeders all over my hunting property, but not necessarily for bait. I keep the feeders full year round because the minerals help the bucks to grow healthier antlers. Also, it provides a source of food during the winter months when greens become scarce. I see nothing wrong with feeders.

i don't see any thing wrong with it. i agree with d j on this your taking hunting out of it. i personal scout and track for days looking and getting know the area i hunt that's what i call hunting where is the woodsman's skill in getting in a factory blind over a feeder and killing a deer. its not about killing deer or what ever. its about the sport and spending time in the woods and enjoying yourself don't get caught up in high tech gadgets and your latest rifle and scope get to know nature and get back to basic of hunting

If you hunt with a feeder I don't even call it hunting if you have to use bate and cameras to find your game just don't hunt. Hunting for me is going out and looking at the signs and finding your game. If I get a kill great if not it's not my time to get one.
To your second question ethicle the spelling is ethical although your spelling is a common mistake.

the correct spelling is unethical. and so is what you're doing.
you are baiting these poor animals so that you can kill them. and you're probably just like most of the other so-called hunters that I've encountered in my life. you really just want to kill a big buck so that you can drive around like an idiot and show off the poor dead animals rack to the other idiots who are trying to do the same thing.
these animals are fenced in and baited. how unfair is that? the only thing that you've said, that I actually agree with, is that the deer are smarter than you are.
I could go off on you all night, but I've wasted enough of my time on you already. I disagree strongly with what you're doing. and these "hunting ranches" are nothing more than slaughter houses.

Rambo said it best. that's how a real man hunts. you should take his advice.

Hell I use a corn feeder.

I only take 1 deer from around it a year.

I end up feeding nearly all winter. The deer get the better end of the deal.
