I would like to get into something along the lines of Administration or Human Resources in the Guard if I decide to join since these lines of duty relate best to my civilian job working in an office at present. Anybody have any suggestions or comments on these types of MOS's in the National Guard, especially relating to Illinois if possible? Also, where is BCT and AIT normally held for MOS's in these types of positions? Any help would be awesome!

Ok, Im getting some great responses, but I always get, "go active", however I would like to serve the country/state while still being able to maintain the job I do...so that is why I would choose NG rather than active duty Army, but believe me I have thought about BOTH! I just think National Guard is something I would prefer...short and long term if I do join. I think an Administrative MOS, in my circumstance, comes from the fact I want to do something that will benefit me careerwise, even after serving, and an MOS in Combat or Infantry wouldnt match up in that aspect for me...if I was in law enforcement or related field, then yes I would consider it a possibility. I am a college graduate holding a bachelors degree, and feel my education background would suit me better in administrative roles much better. I know the POGs get a lot of slack, but remember every service member, regardless of duty, is very essential to the military!

After being in the military I would suggest taking 76Y supply specialist as your primary MOS and use the other as secondary. Why you ask? 76Y supply specialists control who gets what in your unit even the commander knows better than to tick off the person who orders his food and toilet paper.

I find it hilarious that people decide actually recommend other things. I'm a 42A, Administrative Specialist. I went to Fort Jackson, SC. I'm in the Army Reserve, but i went to BCT with people in the National Gaurd, so Army is Army. It shouldn't matter what state you'd be working in. Administrative work varies and is different between units. There is a definition for 42A, but it may be confusing. Basically, you maintain the 201 file (Soldier's military file) so the Soldier's status is deployable. You make sure he/she has current life insurance, contact info, help with promotion packets... It a little more work than the usual office work. But like i said the job varies between units. I do all of the above and since my unit reclasses Soldiers into a new MOS, I also have to in-process the students, maintain their student folders, submit accountability paperwork, and graduate them. Hope this helps. Don't let anyone tell you that your better for something else. You need to make your decisions. Heck with the college you may even consider becoming and Officer or Warrant Officer. Good luck

Hit the GoArmy website, they have a full listing of MOS descriptions just don't take them all literally there are some *cough cough* discrepancies in them.

BCT is typically in Ft. Jackson, Ft. Benning, Ft. Knox, or Ft. Leanord Wood. You could go to any of them, most non-combats end up at Jackson but it's not a gimmie.

AIT I'm not sure for Admin MOS'es.

Oh and you can't go into the Army as a Recruiter, that's something you get to do later in your career, typically around SSG or so.

Why would you want to join the Army National Guard, and to do admin no less? If you have a want to join something to file paper, there is always the Air Force, or the Navy, or as a last resort the Coast Guard, Active Duty mind you. Although if you have a need to do something great, take pride in yourself and your Country and join the Active Duty Army or Marines. And pick a job where they give you a gun, not as a prop in a picture, or a punch line of a joke, but as your primary mode of winning the war.

The last thing the Army, National Guard, or the Land of Lincoln needs is another Admin Kid in a uniform.

CPL / US ARMY

42A Personnel Administration Clerk

This the MOS off of the top of my head seems to fit what you want. They are found in every unit so I'm sure they have them near your home town. I believe you'd end up at Ft. Leanorwood, MS for both BCT and AIT.

You would go to Fort leonard Wood missouri. You have to find a station close to you with that type of MOS.
