In water, flat-faced (brachycephalic) dogs have a greater probability of getting water up their short little noses and sputtering, choking, having trouble breathing, and inhaling water. Many of them have difficulty breathing under normal (non-swimming) situations -- that's why they snort so much, and snore like chain saws (not to mention passing gas). Putting them into water is not a good idea without very close supervision -- and, of course, assuming they really want to be in the water. I would never force one to go into a deep stream or pool, and be careful when bathing them.
Because they are very sensitive to heat, many of the flat faces will enjoy a wading pool that they can walk into, with the water level no more than a couple of inches. That way, if they want to, they can sit or lay down in it with little danger of having it go up their noses. Another good thing to do in warm weather is to wipe the dog's body down with a damp cloth, or lightly mist with a water spray bottle.
Be sure to never leave your flat-faced dog in the car in warm weather -- it doesn't take much to have them go into distress or even die.
Flat-faced dogs are adorable, but we need to take extra care of them to keep them healthy and safe. But they are so worth it!

Most flat faced stocky breeds cannot swim (like Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Pugs, and Boston Terriers). You MUST keep the away from water because they just cannot support their weight in the water and will quickly drown. It is best to not let them swim at all, even with a life-jacket.

Dogs are similar to humans...usually most humans, if threw into a lake would try to swim and might get to shallow land by throwing their bodies around, whereas others do know how to swim by watching others...dogs are the same..most probable would know how to swim...but there are a few breeds that don't get it..

No not all dogs are natural swimmers! However, you can train your dog to swim and be confident in the water.
Take it slow with him because of his snout. You could get him to swim confidently but take it slow until he has worked out is rhythm and is fit enough to be swimming on his own.

Not all dogs swim, some just aren't built for it. You can bring him by a lake and see if he can, he knows what he can do and what he can't . Stay close just incase he needs assistance. Good luck :)

Please be careful. Buy your pet a lifejacket for dogs and do not force him into any water. It can be very difficut for them to get water out of their tiny nose/airways. I have flatfaced dogs and swimming isn't allowed.....they agree!
