My daughter has lice for the second time in a month. I have tried lice medicine from the store, and have also tried olive oil, vinegar, and tea tree oil. I am running out of ideas. She doesn't have any more bugs that I see, but the eggs are stuck on there. I have long nails, so it's hard to pull them out, and the combs don't work very well either.

This home remedy type procedure might be of interest:

Lice infestations are very contagious and are characterized by intense itching caused by an allergic reaction to a toxin in the saliva of the lice.

If you find that commercial lice preparations are too toxic (many contain pesticides) for you or your child's skin, try the following herbal head louse treatment described in the Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine that uses all natural hair care products:

1. Carefully brush the child's head with a mixture of 3 parts olive oil and 1 part lavender essential oil.
* First apply to a small area to test for allergic sensitivity or skin reaction.
* The hair should be saturated with the olive oil mixture and a shower cap put on for 5 hours.
* The olive oil clogs the breathing pores of the lice and they can't hold their breath for more than 4 hours.

2. Follow this by an apple cider vinegar rinse to unglue the nits from the hair.
* Nits or lice eggs are fairly small and can be pearly to grey in color.

3. Then, using a fine-tooth comb, parents should comb the child's hair meticulously to remove the lice eggs from the hair shaft.

4. And finally, wash the child's hair with a natural shampoo.

Once completed, check the child's hair every other day for the next 10 days, and if needed repeat the treatment.

KY jelly. You can find it in the personal hygiene section of the drugstore. Just make sure you buy a shower cap while you're there also. Rub it in your hair like you would shampoo, and let it sit for about an hour, and wash it out. Mayonnaise also works, but it's more difficult to wash out. You also need to wash all of your bedding in super hot water, and all of your clothes. Vaccumn your room if you have carpeting or a rug, and put all of your stuffed animals and pillows in plastic garbage bags. They'll have to stay in there for a couple of weeks, so hide them in your closet or under the bed if you can. This will kill any that escaped your hair since the last thing you want is for them to come back.

Try putting lots of conditioner in her hair, wait a few minutes and before rinsing use the nit comb to get them out. To stop them coming back, put hairspray in her hair. The lice can't get a grip and stay off. Also try a few drops of tea tree oil mixed into the conditioner, that helps keep them away as well.

When you put vinegar on her hair, are you keeping it on while attempting to remove the nits (eggs)? The vinegar usually loosens up the eggs so a comb can remove them quite easily. I suggest a metal tooth comb...the work much better than the plastic. It also helps to spray hairspray on the metal teeth of the comb prior to each pull thru the hair...the spray will cause more of the eggs to stick to the comb.

You can use a hairdryer on the hottest setting along with the comb that came in the kit. I know it may seem hard to get them out it may take a little work. Do a followup treatment in case you missed some of the eggs.

The combs provided work quite well, it just takes huge amounts of time to remove each nit. If your child is school age, she will not be allowed back in, with nits showing. You also need to wash all bedding, furniture as well as possible. All family members should be treated, not just the one with nits, the eggs could be on other members, and they haven't hatched yet. Treating everyone, and everything all at once is about the only way to free yourself of these bugs.

Well it's called the Mayonnaise treatement. It's well yes- disgusting. But it works without fail. Coat her head in Mayonnaise. It'll kill any eggs and bugs there. Mayonnaise, put it all over her hair then leave it on for like 10 mins and wrinse it off just like shampoo. It's disgusting but it's the best way to go.

its good that you have long nails. its easier to pull them out with long nails. the only way to get the eggs out is to pull them out manually.
tell your daughter to come to you whenever she itches anywhere on her head. Look in that place for eggs and pull them out

They make a fine tooth comb just for such a thing. You can find them at your drug store.
