Hi, so i have recently bought a Sonata GLS 2004. I am not familiar with the transmision. There is the ususal P,R,N, and D. But there is also to the side a + and a -. They seem to work like a stickshift. you probably won't understand my question unless you have like this car. but anyway, what are the + and the -. and should i use it in the city or highway??
also, is the Sonata good on gas or does it use alot of gas in general??/

The automatic transmission u have is called tiptronic. It is a automatic and manual trans all in one. The + sign is for up-shifting and the - is for downshifting one click per gear. You can leave it on the left side or for winter/slushy conditions it helps to give u more control on the manual side. Basically the gas mileage is average is 19mpg city and 27mpg highway.

I dont own a Hyundai, but those are basically what you call "tiptronic". It just allows you to shift gears like a Manual.
+ means upshift, like from 2 to 3, - means the opposite.
Um... i recommand you not to use it at all if not necessary, you use it when you want a sporty feel and street race.
Just put it in D and drive normally.... and ignore the + and -. They are just like what you see on other cars like O/D off, 2, and L. You use them when you are towing or going uphill if necessary, remember, only when necessary. But using it does not harm ur tranny, it is designed for that.

The + and - are called shift-tronic. Think of it as clutchless manual shifting. Most foregin cars have it now and some US makes as well. Simply put it adds the ability to control the cars torque and give you added control in inclimate situations.
