Do cardio, anything that gets your heart pumping.
Try starting with fast walks, then moving up to jogging. Make sure to get some really good running shoes though.
Or you can get a stationary bike.
Also your age has nothing to do with weight lifting, you should consider it if you're unfit because you'll already have underdeveloped muscles, which stuns your metabolism.

Well you can lift weights---youre never to young. The benfits of weight training, is it not only gives you strength, it also builds endurance, mobility and specifically when it comes to your legs strengths and best of all loosing inches and toning your body!
The only way to loose fat is by burning it with CARDIO---anything that gets your heart rate going for an extended amount of time. Running, Biking, Sports, Swimming, Dancing ect!
Now for your knee there are exercises you can do to build up your strength in your knee and loosen the stiffness!
