Change usually. Think about what has changed recently, especially in relation to the cat. Good Luck

Probably the most common cause is that they're not neutered. Cats are territorial and this is mostly sexually generated and controlled by hormones causing marking behaviour. It is more common in entire males but can happen in either sex.

Declawing can lead to behavioural and toileting issues long after the declawing is done.

Another issue could be illness, probably urinary tract infection or struvite or oxalate crystals.

Anything that could cause a cat stress is a potential cause of litterbox problems. Changing litter brands or the position of the box is another common cause. New furniture or moving house could do it. Visitors or strangers in the house might do it. A new baby or pet can cause anxiety and show up as a litterbox problem.

It is more common in multicat homes, or those with stray or feral populations around their area.

A litterbox which is too clean or not clean enough for the cats likening is a potential suspect. Not enough litterboxes is also another issue. There should be one more litterbox than cats, some cats don't like to wee and poo in the same one!

There are many causes. The solution is directly linked to the cause. Food or water being to close to the litter is another, cats won't contaminate their food source.

Just a reminder to clean the litter box from dear kitty! Cats are very clean and demand a clean litter box. I know, I have 7 cats and 5 litter boxes that have to be cleaned 4 times per day! They have me trained real well! Every cat must have a pet human that can be trained to clean the litter box! The female cats are REALLY fussy about their litter being cleaned and fresh smelling! They do not like to share their boxes with the male cats! lol! I have male and female covered boxes and the females get upset if the males try to use their boxes!

sometimes if the litter box is too small they will miss it and go over the edge because mine do it or it could be that the litter box isnt clean to theyre expectations because cats can be picky
