If the city life is important to you, its got to be portland. Eugene is a great college town with enough to do to keep busy. If you are actually more interested in the outdoors, than the big city, I would try Bend (trendy mountian town)...Almost any where in western OR will have Plenty of outdoor opportunities. Good luck!

Portland, of course (not too many "big shopping malls" though).

But Washington County is the economic engine of Oregon so lots of the jobs are in the outlying western suburbs in Beaverton and Hillsboro. Nike, Intel, many major computer/electronics operations (like Yahoo) have a presence.

if you still want to live in the city, light rail (max) will take you to the westside in 20-30 mins from downtown.

Eugene without doubt.
Less employment opportunities than Portland perhaps, but better quality of life by far. Laid back, a "bit" counter cultural, beautiful, tons of outdoor activities year round. Easier commute, quicker to get anywhere, no where near the traffic problems of larger cities.

Lake Oswego is a great place to live. Tigard has all those things as does downtown Portland.
