I just moved into a new house and everytime I take my cat out to the back he walks real low then rolls into a roll around the dirt. I think he is trying to mark his territory or is it something else?

cats have scent glands under their chin, when they run their chins on our legs and on objects around the house they are marking their territory. If he is rolling, and not using his chin or spraying then he probably just smells something he likes.. kind of like how dogs will roll on a dead animal and such.

Why do cats roll over on their backs?
Cats roll over on their backs for a variety of reasons: if your cat flops down in front of you and rolls over on his back for a belly skritch, it's a sign of his complete trust in you that you won't ever hurt him. Other times, he wants to play. If the cat is female and in heat, it's a form of foreplay. It's also a part of their social standing. Domesticated cats don't display this as much as wild ones do. Wild cats have a very similar social structure to that of wolves.

He is marking his new territory...he knows that any other cat will smell his scent very well, no matter what part of the body will touch the ground.
And he is also simply enjoying it!

I believe you may be correct. Cats are VERY territorial and instintively mark their territory to warn other cats to stay away!

He is trying to mark his scent over your back...he is trying to get rid of the scent of the last animal that live there. And any possible outside animals to let them know he is there...
