A friend of mine has been in the Air Force since October of 2004. He has been sent to a few bases in Tx and as of August of 2006, he was deployed to Japan. Plenty of his friends who do the same thing he does have stayed in one place throughout most of their air force career. I want to kow how they choose who to deploy and where they deploy them to? Does the Airman have a say in anyhting. I mean, can they request to be sent whever?

first of all noone gets "deployed" to japan, a deployment is temporary duty.....japan is either a short or long tour therefore it is a pcs (permanent change of station). everyone has the option of filling out a "dream sheet" with a list of the US and overseas bases they would like to go to.however it is common for people to be sent to bases they dont choose....my husband was at his first base for 6 years with a full dream sheet of only stateside bases, he finally figured he wasnt going anywhere anyway so he cleared his sheet........3 months later we got orders to japan. you can decline the orders...but only one set of orders can be declined, and sometimes if they are critically manned at the base they are going to they send them anyway. also each year they do an "equa-listing" with is basically like a census of bases, when the list comes out it will show what bases need certain ranks in certain jobs ......then they look for people that are due to change stations that have that on their dream sheet first, if they cant fill the spots they take random people. usually with the exception of a few CONUS ( continental US) bases that noone wants to go to , unaccompanied (single with no dependents) airmen move every 2 years.....accompanied its every 3-4 years.

Deploys or is Stationed? those are 2 very diverse concerns. Stationed way you're assigned to a unit or command at a different place for 12 to 40 8 months. Deployment way you bypass away that place (frequently with unit/command) for a different volume of time to yet yet another region inspite of the undeniable fact that then bypass back. those deployments will additionally be from a pair of weeks to over year in era. army, Marines & Air rigidity each and every have a suitable quantity of group of workers stationed in Japan. military has some inspite of the undeniable fact that now not near to as many as they don't have as many posts/bases because of the fact the different branches do.

The service member normally has ZERO choice in the matter.

Normally, the computer kicks out what specialty is needed where, matches that up with who is at the top of the list needing a new duty station, and off they go!

Don't worry, when I was in the Navy my ship rotated to Japan every three months or so. Japan is an awesome place. Your friend should love it there!

The Airman has a say up to the time he raises his right arm and swears in, and signs his name on the bottom line. At that moment, you agree that the American owns your Bazoo, and can do with it, what they will. Including the National, and Air National Guards. Everyone understands that at that moment, we relinquish control of our destiny to the military. No one knows how they determine who will go, and who will stay.

You can request all you want, and they can deny all they want.

Most personnel are stationed based on need. They may have needed your friend at that time...I think they also decide on seniority, or time in service and time in rank.

Most likely, they needed someone with his specialty at that time, and his name came up on top of the list.

no. their job is the biggest determining factor to where when and how often they deploy.

now, if you mean permanent duty station, then yes, they do have some say, but ultimately it comes down to the needs of the Military.

Assignments are made for the good of the service. Skills, time in service, grade level, contracts, and luck etc all play a role.
