We need to limit immigration. I'd start with border security and a visa tracking system and outlawing sanctuary cities. Then reduce family reunification preferences to spouse and minor children, and get rid automatic birthright citizenship as every EU country and Canada have done.
Then cut the numbers except add a slight amount of additional H1B visas (to 100,000 with NO 'unlimited number' so long as they graduate from the least of our colleges which would dwarf the quota amounts in no time.)
Give higher subsidies to agriculture dependant on being in the government social security number checking program. (We don't want to be dependant on foreign food as we are on oil and are becoming on manufacturing.) We will have slightly higher prices on 'stuff'- as we used to have. But the important things like education and health care and quality of life would be much better. Also, houses would cost less (both a blessing and a curse depending on what side of the picture you are on.) But it would work out.
However, the UN is projecting that at the rate third world and developing countries are reproducing there will be 9.2 BILLION people in the world in 2050 (midrange numbers.) The entire western world can't 'take these poor souls', unfortunately.
We addressed our own overpopulation and achieved declining birth rates. Now other countries are trying to persuade us that achieving our goal is actually a sad decline we should rectify by bringing in poor and unskilled people. However, that just lowers the per capita lifestyle of each individual, as we have to subsidize the newcomers.

Hate to say yes without sounding cold, but that's my honest opinion. As a productive member of society, I have been working and paying taxes since I was 16 yrs old. Now, at age 30, I couldn't even get any government assistance when I so needed it. I was out of a job for 2 months and Unemployment denied me my benefits. Some how a person from Mexico can come over to the U.S. and get almost any kind of government assistance such as Medi-cal or Disability benefits. How is that? I don't see them paying any kind of taxes. They are not all the "poor souls" that they appear to be. I see Ethiopians, Somalis and other middle eastern immigrants driving Escalades getting all their doctors visits and medications completely paid for courtesy of you and I, tax payers. My health benefits from my job require me to pay co-pays and deductibles. Why do we have to support them? Wouldn't you come to America if you were a ignorant person from another country? I could go on about this for days, but bottom line is that most immigrants take complete advantage of the"system" at the expense of hard working Americans. I would rather them stay in their own country if they can't be independent of any government help. God knows we could use that money we spend on them for research on cures for diseases or Americans that really need assistance.

The U.S. is still a vast, expansive land. Through the ages, new waves of immigrants have fueled our various economic revolutions. I believe that we should crack down on illegal immigration, but increase the quota for legal immigration and permit more educated foreigners into the country regardless of national origin.

We shouldn't have to take care of other countries' citizens. Deport the illegals we currently have and close the borders to new ones. They should take care of their own citizens.
All this talk about how they are "just coming for a better life" is a lot of crap. They shouldn't be demanding that we take care of them.

Nobody else will let them in illegally. They catch them and put them in prison.
