My 9 year old son has been holding his bowel movements to the point where I'm having to give him an enema to use the bathroom. When he does finally go, the stool is so large it's hard to believe it all was inside of him. The stool is not hard at all so I cannot figure out why he is doing this. Any suggestions on what to do?

Um yeah, CALL YOUR DOCTOR! He can become very VERY ill if you let this continue. Waste products are not meant to stay in the body (obviously) and him holding it in, for whatever reason that might be, is not good at all, even if you are giving him enemas.

Again, CALL YOUR DOCTOR!

When my daughter was an infant, she began doing that once a really bad movement caused a fissure and made bowel movements painful for her. Thereafter, she'd cross her legs and refuse to let them out! She even developed a UTI from this on one occasion. We had to keep her relaxed, almost distracted, when she felt on coming on. In a 9 year old, I don't know. Have you spoken to his doc? Perhaps it's a psychosomatic thing.
