You have to read the DSM book for this, since there are many types of bi-polarism. Basically, bi-polarism is characterized by wild swings in mood from a frenzied active mood to a highly depressive mood. The types are based on the duration of the various moods.

well my mother is bi-polar. ive delt with it all my life. they say it is a chemical imbalance. she went through ups and downs. one minute she would be happy the next she would be depressed. and it would go to major depression. sometimes she would want to kill herself. thats what people go through if you want the definition look it up heres a site en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipolar_
