Since Kona is an international airport (like most of the airports in Hawaii), you should be able to get to Kona from any airport.
The major airports such as LAX and SFO will have a better variety of flights but you can also access Kona (KOA) from Oakland (OAK) via Aloha Airlines or San Diego (SAN)/San Jose (SJC) on Hawaiian Airlines. You can also access Kona by flying into Honolulu and catching an inter-island flight from there.
Good luck on finding a flight that suits your needs....

United and American fly direct out of LAX
Aloha flys both non-stop and one stop out of Orange County / John Wayne to Kona. They fly from San Diego to Maui with connections to Kona.
Hawaiian flys out of LAX and San Diego but those will be connceting flights to Kona.

i like Southern California...there are far extra possibilities and places to bypass. the climate is magnificent continually. i like Hawaii yet i does not stay right here my comprehensive existence; there are not many possibilities and that is too small (it takes under an afternoon to bypass around Oahu). i could fairly prefer to have a summer season residing house on any Island yet Oahu yet i could lots quite stay in Southern California.

I recommend Aloha Air which used to fly out of John Wayne (parking so much better than LAX).
