i really need to see the dentist again. I went a few months ago, for a examination, finding out that i needed lots of dental work. I have a few teeth that are rotten, can be fixed with fillings or caps. I told my dentist that it took all of my will power, to make the appointment that day. I told him i was a coward, he laughed and said you will be fine. I have had 2 absesses that kept me from seeing the dentist, along with a few teeth falling out. I don't mind getting fillings, it just that i hate the feeling, the sound, and the looks of their drill. My teeth are super sensitive, and it don't matter if i get a shot for numbing. I get so shakened that i sweat, shake, and get sick to my stomach before they begin to fill my cavitys. Any suggestions on how to get over the fear. I can't afford sedation dental work, or i would go that route.

You are not alone I shiver of the tought of having to visit a dentist but there is hope! Here are a few suggestions I found helpful. First and most important having confidence in your dentist and his ability, second there is a pill (oral sedation) that can be given a little bit before treatment, drilling, scaling etc that I without doubt works so well that I asked the dentist to let me know when he starts so I can prepare for any pain or discomfort and his reply was I am finished! Wow was I impressed! I felt a little embarrassed but have to admit I do not regret missing out on the hour I was under treatment. Not being able to afford sedation and dental care should not be a reason to avoid your dentist here are a few links to help with lowering costs and offering options for affordable dental care, choosing a dentist and types products and prescriptions or print free discount drug card available.

Well its mind over matter
IS the dentist worse than putting up with the pain of bad teeth ?
I was like you when I was younger .. I had 3 teeth filled with out numbing because I was afraid of the freezing needle .. I suffered through those fillings and then I still had to get a shot to have a tooth pulled .. so I started thinking that I went through that torture for 3 fillings and then I didn't even feel that needle for the extraction ..duh
there are dentists who are a bit more understanding about your fear and there are other ways to deal with it .. I would look around for another dentist if you can there are several methods of sedation and not all are that expensive considering what its already going to cost you ..
Many of us understand and can relate to your situation and all I can say is go for it .. once its over with think about how silly it was to be afraid .. or .. grab him somewhere and squeeze and tell him .. we are not going to hurt each other are we ...

I used to be terrified of the dentist too. I had to get a lot of dental work done just like you do. There isn't really anything to be afraid of. The worst thing is the needle, once you can get past that you'll be just fine. The needle doesn't even hurt that much. When he's giving you the needle just think of something else and take deep breaths. I'm sure that you're in a lot of pain if you have abscesses and rotten teeth. Just keep thinking that once you go to the dentist and get all of your teeth fixed you won't be in anymore pain. Once you can get past that first appointment you won't be afraid anymore. If you're that afraid ask the dentist if they have nitrous oxide. It really helps to relax you. But trust me there is nothing to be afraid of. Take if from me someone who has been to the dentist a million of times and used to be scared before i went.

Think about how much better you can eat and feel about your teeth. Just keep reminding yourself that it will not last all day. Get the dental assistant to hold your hand while you get the injections. I was the same way but now I am happy with my mouth. Don't wait until it is too late. Your teeth will not get better on their own. Good luck

A DENTAL ABSCESS IS A VERY SERIOUS AND POTENTIALLY LETHAL SITUATION, LET ALONE 2 OF THESE. I'D BE MORE FRIGHTENED TO HAVE THESE IN MY MOUTH AT ALL. THESE MUST BE THE FIRST ONES TO REPAIR.
THE OTHER REPAIRS SHOULD BE DONE ON A PRIORITY BASIS. IF THE ROTTEN TEETH ARE WORTH SAVING THEN THEY SHOULD -- OTHERWISE EXTRACTED.
AS FAR AS FEAR, HAVE THE DENTIST PRESCRIBE AN ANTI-ANXIETY MEDICATION, LIKE ATIVAN, HALCION OR VALIUM. THESE ARE ALL ORAL MEDICATIONS AND ARE NOT LIKE THE UNCONSCIOUS SEDATION LIKE THE INJECTABLE MEDS.

Go see your family practice doctor & ask for them to perscribe something to calm your nerves. They can give you a relaxant or an assedative of sort. Explain the situation & let them know how much it's bothering you. The only catch is you have to have someone take you to the dentist because you don't wanna be behind the wheel.

Good Luck - And I am sure you really will be fine ;)
