Before you go, do your homework about where to stay and what to do. Websites like www.tripadvisor.com and www.fodors.com have great sections with reviews by real travelers and message boards where you can ask questions and read what others have written about a certain destination.

Don't overpack - you really can wear a dress or a pair of pants more than once! Just bring a couple of sweaters or jackets if it's cool - you don't need a completely different outfit every day.

Get off the beaten path as much as possible - don't just see the major tourists sites. See how the natives live (even in the US!) Take a chance sometimes - you'll be amazed at how much you'll get out of a trip by doing something different!

Do buy a guidebook before you go - they are not always accurate but will give you good information and help
Do check out hotels on the web site
Do take out good travel and health insurance
Do get all the relevant vaccines
Do register with the local embassy if you are away for a long period
Do make use of the hotel/guest house safe facilities
Do note the emergency doors on an aircraft
Do work up to a sun tan and use a high factor screen for the first few days
Do try to learn a few words of the language before you go, even if these are just pleasantries like, good morning/afternoon/evening, and thank you
Do take a phrase book
Do copy the photopage and visa page of your passport and keep it on you at all times
Do leave a copy of your itinerary with friends or family, and check in with them regularly
Do travel light - one suitcase max. You don't need 12 pairs of underpants or socks, you need only a couple of shirts/blouses and a few T-shirts or sports shirts
If you need to use regular postal services use a Post Restante at main post offices everywhere
Do not wear a bum bag - marks you out as a foreigner
Do not drink too much alcohol before or during the flight
Do not look like a tourist - in some parts of the world you may make yourself a target for crime
Do not take all your money, travellers cheques, ATM or credit cards with you when out and about
While in tropical and other developing countries drink bottled water.

If you are an American don't act like one or as if you are at home, don't insult local people by insisting on paying in dollars - they will not accept them.

Above all enjoy yourself
