I was at a wedding and the bride is a large size woman and very elegant and beatuiful someone told me that the gown she wore was tasteful. What does that mean? I know it means something good but that was the first time I ever heard this statement made I know it is and "old school " term.

I believe the individual meant that seeing as how the woman was large she picked a gown that covered her, was not too tight on her and made her look beautiful

Tasteful is a term used to state that the dress was best suited for the large size of the bride, another words she looked very nice. And they liked the dress.

above, a few have added meanings to the term, "tasteful " that are not there....they have put the context of a large women into the meaning, and that context doesn't exist in the word "Tasteful."
The other half have it right....a "tasteful room," a "tasteful setting," a "tasteful dress"... "IN GOOD TASTE", appropriate, pleasant, non-offending, ..... in otherwords, 'GREAT."
The size of the woman had nothing to do with the compliment

This means that the dress was appropriate. as in she has taste in clothes. For instance if she wore a skimpy teeny gown, that would not have been tasteful, it would have been inappropriate...being tasteful/having taste has nothing to do with food, or weight...

Saying the gown was taseful means that it is so beautiful it looks like something to eat like her wedding cake for instance.

I take it was conservative on her large frame and a good dress for her. Tasteful is a better compliment that nice. I would portray to me that she chose her dress wisely and it was flattering on her body. Not too tight or revealing in all the wrong places (tastless) it was tasteful.

Tasteful means just that--picked out in good taste. It looks good on her and fits the mood of the wedding.

I would take that to mean that for her size, it fit her well and looked nice, not like she was trying to squeeze into a size that would have been un becoming on her.
