You can almost never go wrong with an edible favor, but I'm not sure what a mintbook is. I'm guessing it's something to do with mints.
Chocolate goes well with mints. We did M&Ms in organza bags for one favor, and alternated with petite non pareils (think pastel, mint flavored snowcaps) in tins for our wedding favors. Since you could buy B&W M&Ms in stores at the time, we used those. You can also substitue Hershey kisses.
Tins were pretty cheap from a specialty science company. http://www.specialtybottle.com/index.asp?PageAction=Custom&ID=25 They're cheaper here than they are on wedding websites.
You can also make placecard candles, which would serve as decorations as well as favors. Or if you didn't want to do the individual place card idea, you could just put your names and the wedding date. Votive holders and tea lights are ridiculously cheap, and this is a pretty easy project.

Honestly, in regards to wedding favors, it is not necessary to have them, but if you do, edible ones work the best. Not too many people keep the little trinkets that many people give away at weddings unless they are something they would actually use. They also get rid of things that have pictures of the couple, or their names. I am not sure why that is, but that is just how it is.
For my wedding I have decided to go with treats. I am going to place some cookies in these bags and seal them with glue and attach a ribbon with our wedding colors on it. There will be a small thank you coming card that is also our color on each bag, which will be placed on each guests plate. You can use any type of treat- i just prefer bakery items...lol. You cant go wrong with brownies or cookies.

i'm getting a bunch of little wedding bells (about 7 dollars for a pack of 24) and tying some ribbon on them with a poem telling guests to ring them for a kiss. also they will ring them at our fairwell instead of throwing rice or bubles or birdseed or w/e else there is to throw :P

a friend of mine got a big container of Jelly Belly's (jelly beans) and put them in mini tulle bags which was very inexpensive, original, and very cute, oh and yummy!
you can also get different candies: http://www.candyfavorites.com/shop/catalog-jelly-belly-bulk.php

a cousin of mine gave out bubbles and little bags of hershey hugs and kisses with a poem saying "hugs and kisses from the Mr and Mrs" it very cute. it also had their names and date on the card!
I like the idea of a cady bar - just a bunch of different types and sizes of containers to hold different candies that you can buy for cheap in bulk. then get some little bags or boxes for guests to bring the candy favors home. this is especially fun if there will be kids at the wedding.

At a wedding you can do center pieces that have floating candles that can be decorated on the side or adding colored beads that can necklaces that are given to the bridesmaids. Sometimes just adding that touch is just as cute. Doing your own flowers for center pieces are always cute too.

Cards from a charity that you donate to on behalf of the guests that say something like... "In your honour we have donated to _____ to help with ____"
It's unique, thoughtful, helpful and can be cost effective for you.

My favorite is little plastic or any kind of bell depending on your price range at every place setting. there is usually a poem attached about ringing the bell to wish the couple well.
