I'm visiting my grandparents in Pensacola, FL. I'm from Saint Louis, MO. My child receives MC+ (Medicaid) from the state of Missouri. 3 weeks ago he went to the doctor over an ear infection and a cold. He was prescribed Amoxicillin with Clavulanate as well as Albuterol. His ear infection had not healed from amoxicillin, so he was put on Zithromax this past Thursday. On Friday, we were on our way to FL. That evening, he projectile vomited and seemed fine before and after. The following morning he had a diaper full of diarrhea. He was unable to keep anything down, including Pedialyte. On through Sat., he could not keep anything down, so I called the doctor. She took him off Zithromax and said to give him some sort of home made apple juice along with mild diet. He kept food down until this afternoon (36 hours later), and now will not hold anything in. Will I have to pay upfront and then be reimbursed by Medicaid if I take him to the hospital or will I be covered? He just turned one.

I'm not sure about the medicaid coverage...Have you tried giving him tiny sips of pedialyte now that he's not keeping anything down? Basically all they will do at the hospital is check to see if he's dehydrated and if he is they will put him on an IV. If you don't think he is, then try giving him tiny sips of pedialyte every couple minutes just so he stays hydrated. If you are still worried, I'd take him to the hospital and just make sure you have money with you just in case.

Medicaid programs in each state contract with physicians in that state to provide coverage for Medicaid patients. Medicaid will not pay private doctors outside of their state since they are not contracted with them. Any emerency room should accept your out-of-state Medicaid, though. Sacred Heart has a nice Pediatric ER... I've been once (with a 5-month-old who had vomiting and diarrhea) and we were in and out within 45 minutes. Everyone in the PedER was absolutely wonderful, and it wasn't the nightmare I imagined the ER would be. If you go to a private physician, you probably will not get reimbursed unless you have prior authorization from someone at Medicaid - and I'd get that in writing (you can receive a fax at Kinko's for much cheaper than your doctor's bill would be)!

My children have medicaid here in WI and if your state is like ours there is a number that you can call if you are going to an out of network hospital. I've had to take my children a handful of time sto different hospitals out of network, and was fine. I called when we returned home and told them what had happened and they covered the entire bill. (Thankfully because one was due to a broken elbow!) so you can either take him in and call when you return home or see if you can look up the phone number and call to tell them you are taking him. Good luck and I hope your little guy feels better!

If you take him to the ER he is covered in any state. You do not have to pay up front unless you have a co-pay.
