This area is called the "Sub Occipital Regions" (Or SO Region).

Headaches which result from tension here are relieved by two things that work really well.

1. The Chiropractic Adjustment. If you've noticed; taking pain pills (Aspirin, Tylenol, etc.) simply cover up the pain. When the meds wear off, the pain is still there because the problem is still there. The adjustment will address misalignment in the bones which is almost certainly there in that region.

2. Chiropractic Muscle Adjustment. There is something called the SO-Release. It works wonders and I have great results with my patients.

I do these both to my patients with your problem and they ALWAYS get better. Just give it a try. Fixing the problem will fix the symptom! Fixing the symptom does not fix the problem. Does that make sense?

There is a spot, located on the back of the head, low where there is like a dip there, anyway, you can massage that area, your neck muscles will relax, and help stop a headache. You can use heating pads, rice socks, a foam cervical collar, to be worn at home. They are used to help support the head from neck injuries, but help with tension headaches, and headaches caused by tense shoulder/neck muscles. The foam collar costs about 20bucks.

Valerian root, helps with muscle tension. You can use this in tea form, capsules, or the root itself. Available in health/drug stores.

Go get a massage! Do you work on a computer? If you do then you might have a tight sub scapulars. It is a muscle that is on the "wings". Hold your arms out at shoulder height and look in a mirror. The little triangle that looks like it connects the back of your arm to your arm pit is the subscap. If it is tight then it is pulling the upper trap down which is pulling the muscle in the back of your neck. Tell your therapist to check it if you get a massage.

i get that too. You need to do the chin tuck exercise, it is a neck exercise that releves a lot of tension and is highly recommended by my PT. You have to look in the mirror for this one because a chin tuck can easily go wrong. The right way to do a chin tuck is to tuck it in in a way that gives you a double chin and makes you look really goofy, but it helps. Hold it for a short period of time, relax then repeat.

Also stretch your neck by using your hand to pull your head towards your left shoulder (while your face is facing foward), hold it for a short period of time then repeat on the other side.

Another one that I do that compliments the previous exercise is I pull my head with my hand in a downwards diaginal direction so that my head position is basically making me stare at my armpit, then I do the other side (also recommended by my PT).

Allways use the opposite hand to pull down your head in the desired direction.

One that I invented that helps me the most out of all the exercises (and is the hardest to explain) is I do a chin tuck combo while I am pulling my shoulders down by using a pull down motion with arms straight down by my side and having closed fists (this is sort of similar to the shrug exercise that people do when they lift weights but my arms are slightly raised and in front of my body) but you are not lifting the weights, instead imagine that you are holding workout weights and that the weights are weighing you down and causing you to pull down and stretch that top shoulder-neck muscle area.

As a headache sufferer myself, I know that if you do not get a "restfull" night of sleep you tend to have the tension in your neck and this causes the headaches. I use a sleep "aide" such as Lunesta and I sleep well thus releasing the tension in my neck. This is not the answer for everyone, but it works for me.

I apply peppermint oil to the back of my neck. This really seems to cool and losen up my neck muscles. If it burns too much for you, mix it with a little bit of olive oil, this will take some of the "burn" out of the oil, but will still work.

i see people use those what bag things. a bag filled with wheat and grain (odd i know) which is heated and placed on the back of the neck, geniuse and quick too.

try sleeping on a heating pad! i get a lot of tension headaches and it always helps :)
