Very true, Jesus said in the bible to be Holy for I am Holy, and He wants us to walk in a manner that would please him.

you do get holyness from understanding the teachings of Jesus....., OR from Buddah, OR from confucious, OR from any figure that you can derive holyness from.
Then do good toward ALL people, not just justify your beliefs by going to church and only believing in other Christians. Believe in ALL of mankind - for this is the true path to salvation.

I don't agree with the analogy. When I use soap to clean my dirty hands, they usually get pretty clean. Same applies to Ajax in the dirty shower. Or the Tide pen to a stain on my shirt. Regardless of all that, I'm glad you enjoyed the sermon.

The concepts of sin and holyness are both void: neither has any meaning in the real world. So the preacher's claim is irrelevant. It is not unlikely that ALL his claims are irrelevant.

Sounds about right to me. I did a Bible study on holiness sometime ago. We discussed ways to grow in holiness such as reading our Bible daily, praying regularly, having a revered fear of God, and obeying His commands. We are also called to be Holy because He is holy. And when we are born again, we are given a new heart with new desires. Desires to do His will and keep his commands. etc... you get the idea I hope.

I see his point but I think he's not quite right.
Why else would it be important for us to surround ourselves with good people and good things if they couldn't influence us?
Because of our fallen nature it's true we gravitate towards sin, but that doesn't mean we can't LEARN to gravitate towards what is good. It just takes time.
If you consistently "feed" your soul with good and pure things then your soul will begin to love those things and despise evil. When you reach that point you have become a very holy person and you can then begin to really influence others to be the same.
