666 - A lot of people say it doesn't mean much. A lot say it's evil, but they don't really say why. Christians know the reason it's evil - it's the mark of the beast. What I want to know is, what does everyone else think, and why?

And yes, Holy Cow, I do have the Holy Bible; the New King James Version, to be exact, and it would be nice if I could get some of those other references you were talking about so I could explain it to some friends of mine. :)

skepsis, I agree that some of the things people do to avoid this number are (shall we say?) stupid. Just 'cause the amount we have to pay for groceries at the store turns out to be $6.66 or $666 or something like that doesn't mean the groceries are cursed or that we aren't meant to buy them. We still need that food to live! :)

I know what the number 666 means....This is not public knowledge as I have not told many people and the simplicity of it may astound you.
Revelation 13:18----This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666.............
666 is not the mark of the beast by the way; 666 is the number of the beast.
There are three associations ......and the number must be taken in context with the other two, to be fully understood.
there is the NAME of beast.............
the MARK of the Beast ......................and
the NUMBER of its name...................
It is actually very simple but it took a lot of reflection and insight to solve the enigma. I am the only person I know who really KNOWS what the number means, what it refers to, the NAME of the beast and the MARK of the Beast and taken in context with other biblical references you will readily understand the connection TOO. But I must ask you first if you have a bible because I will need to give you several other references for you to look up in order to confirm it for yourself.

It is only significant because it appears in the book of Revelation, as the identification of "the Beast". But that's all it is, identification. Only, because it's in code, no one can be absolutely sure of who it is. (Nero/Domition was suggested by some but it could be nearly anyone.) So some fixate on the number until it takes on a life of its own, independent of its owner. Now people reject license plates, phone numbers, hotel rooms, state highways and other ridiculous coincidences based solely on the number itself. I mean, must we assume that the devil takes personal responsibility for every time those three digits appear together on your car's odometer? Superstition can be a tragically ugly thing.

I think the numerals we use wouldn't have even existed at "the beginning," so humans made it up about the number.
