It's an Italian word and it can be used either as adverb, noun or adjective.
As an adverb in Italian "bene" means basically "well" but it has other different meanings:
A few examples:

quella persona veste molto = that person dresses very well stare bene di salute = to be in good health
questa giacca non mi sta bene= this jacket doesn't suit me
lo credo bene ! = I should think so !
When "bene" is used as noun it means:
1.- good ; il bene e il male = good and evil
2.- fondness, affection; volersi bene= to be fond of each other
3.- beloved person, darling; sweetheart; mio bene=my darling
4 .- sake, good, welfare; per il bene del popolo = for the welfare of the people; per il tuo bene = for your own good
5 .- gift; blessing: la salute è il più grande bene= health is the greatest of blessings
6 .- goods , property, possession ; bene di lusso= luxury goods.
Finally when "bene" is used as an adjective:
la gente bene = upper-class society

It means "well" (adverb) also in Latin.
