Mel is quite right, except for one small detail:
The speed of the tape is half that of SP when the recorder is set to LP; halfing the tape speed, doubles the recording time, as it takes the recorder twice as long, to spool the tape through the mechanisim.
EP runs the tape speed at roughly 33% of the SP speed, enabling a 3 hour tape, to run for approx 9 hours, however, with the tape speed only 33% or so of the SP speed, the video-head(or drum) has less physical room to store the picture information, and the quality drops away.

SP = Slow Play
LP - Long Play
SLP = Extended Play
Way back in the day when people used VHS to record, you could select one of the 3 options, which would affect the qulaity of the recording and the length. If you chose SP, the quality would be higher because the tape would be moving slower, thereby catching more frames on the tape. However you'd be using up considerably more tape than the other options. For example you'd only be able to fit 1 2-hour movie on the tape versus 2 movies on LP and 4 movies on SLP. But the higher the tape speed, the lesser quality.
