mouth = chewing and ptyalin in saliva starts to break down food
stomach = gastric juices furhter breakdown food, some absorption already takes place
small intestine = namely the duodenum, jejunum and ileum this is where most ( 90%) of nutrient absorption takes place, some protein breakdown continues here...
large intestine = namely the ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid and rectum... most water absoprtion takes place here... by the time the particles reach the descending colon, no absrption takes place anymore, the sigmoid and the rectum serves as reservoir for the particles ( now known as feces ) before they are passed out of the body
