First, you should mention what operating system you're running on your computer.
For an XP and most other recent OS:
Go to "start" menu
select "all programs"
select "accessories"
select "system tools"
select "system restore"

A window will pop up prompting you to select or set a restore time. Choose or set a time to when you recall that your computer was working with no or limited problems. The system will re-start. ALL the work, programs, downloads, software, etc that was stored on your computer AFTER the time you set for restore will be LOST unless you have it backed-up.

For older OS, if you bought the computer new, it should have come with a CD or a set of floppys labeled for "restore"
You can also re-install the OS or run multiple OS on one computer.
Check through your CDs and with whatever material came with your computer for a restore disk IF there isn't a "system restore" directly in your System Tools or Control Panel.

Good luck.

Windows automatically makes a backup of your system any time a change is made (such as a new installation.) So if you had a problem running the computer, you can do a System Restore to a point that it worked. Do this by going to Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance and there is a link for System Restore. When you load SR, you have the option to choose any point in the past to restore the system to. Select a point, click Restore, and the system will do the rest.
