I had to have surgery on both of my big toes about a year ago, and had to have most of the nail removed. I have gotten comments that "you have the smallest toenails i have ever seen" and that makes me feel self consious... other than getting fake/ acrylic nails, is there any way i can get my toes to look "normal" (I almost never wear sandals because of this and it's getting really warm out, so i want to wear sandals, but feel confident that nobody is going to comment on my toes anymore)

what i mean is that i had the "permanent" surgery, where they stopped both sides from growing, and the nail kind of "merged" with the nail (not literally, but it looks like that) and the nail cannot grow past that mark, they are about the size of my nail on my middle finger, i've waited, but they cant grow out any further.

I had this very painful and traumatic ingrown toenail surgery (called chemical matrisectomy) done yrs ago with deep regrets.!!!!!Never, in a million years.!!!! However, I didn't have any problem of a normal growth of the toenails. You can encourage the growth of normal nails thru calcium intake via tabs or milk. You can also apply cloves of garlic to strengthen and lengthen.them. Moreover, you can camouflage them with nail polish. Try to stay away from professional pedicures until you're sure your toe nails are completely healed and only at refutable nail salons.

Moreover, if they are uniform, you should overcome your self-consciousness. How would you feel if they were of different sizes? Invest more time cuttting and shaping them to encourage a normal look. Do nail care especially after showers or baths. Cut the offending and sharp edges off with nail clipper to avoid the reoccurence of ingrown toenails. Soak in epsom salts. In time, these toenails will grow back normally in size and color.

Cut the toenails properly in a straight across.fashion. Ingrown nails can be exacerbated by wearing improper shoes, or the improper cutting of nails; but they are predominantly caused by inherited anatomical considerations

Take that unsolicited rude remark "that you got that smallest toenails I have ever seen" with a grain of salt. and simply that...... rude and unkind. . It's totally uncalled for if it's from a friend and you don't need that kind of friends. Or if it's from an enemy, you were right to consider her an enemy. the motive might be one of jealousy. Tell her to go suck on her own big toes.!!!!!!

Besides, people usually focus on a smiling face, and nice clean and bright teeth before feet. Only a podiatrist usually and ought to focus on feet first.!!!!! Unless of course, your potential admirer has a foot fetish ! Small dainty toes with small toe nails are usually sexy on a petite person.!!

I had the same thing done on both feet and it took a few years to grow normal again. Even though it looks normal one of them is hollow under one half of the nail. It will take time but like the other person lots of calcium intake will help and getting pedicures with leg/ foot massage helps them to grow. Do not do the acrylic on your toes! I did after I thought it was healed enough, about a year later, and the bacteria that lingers in the pedi tubs and on the tools gave me a nast fungal infection that will never go away and it hurts worse than the surgery did. It is also great to soak your feet in hot water, as hot as you can stand it, and epsom salt. Good luck!
