I have a $300 litter maid and I can still smell it! I live in a small condo and hate the slightest smell of it. HELP!

Oh wow. I just have a regular covered litter box and we never have a smell. Even when I have visitors over, whom I know will tell the truth, they don't smell it. I use Fresh Step kitty litter. We only have one cat now, but have had up to three in that one litter box for a short period of time. We empty it every single day. Once a week maybe we will skip one day.

I'm not sure. Sorry if I'm no help. Definitely change it daily. Make sure your kitty isn't tracking outside of the box...

I have 4 cats in my house and no litter smell. Start at the beginning and think about what you're feeding the cat. I give mine IAMS. It's a little pricey but available just about everywhere and the litterbox is much less stinky. I have an extremely sensitive nose and can't stand any odd smells. If you replace the litter and then start your cats on IAMS within a few days the smell will be much less. Just be sure to do the switch gradually so the cat's tummy doesn't get upset.

Use a good quality (non dusty) litter like Tidy Cat, which clumps well. All the cats seem to like it.

You can also buy some X-O which is a concentrated cleaner and spray that you can get from janitorial supply stores. I spray a little on the litter after I scoop (can't afford an automatic box) and then in the air. Takes the odor right out of the air. Great stuff, and a lot of cat breeders use it. It is also supposed to be a "natural" product so it won't harm the cats.

Works for me!

I have 5 cats and use multiple litter boxes. I'm currently using fresh step clay litter in one because it is the only kind one of my cats will use. Another one has Arm and Hammer Clumping litter which works pretty good. The last box has the Worlds Best Litter which I have found works better than the others but my cats don't use it as much as the one with the clumping litter. I've also used the crystals in a fourth box and found it does work pretty well but looks awful after a few uses. Also tried Yesterdays News and didn't like it at all. We have an air purifier and it doesn't really make enough of a difference for it to be worth the money. If I had to chose 1 it would be the Worlds Best Litter but unfortunately not all cats like it.

Yes, I also lived in a small space with litter box and three cats. I cleaned the box twice a day, used good litter and baking soda. It still had a little funky smell that I could not get rid of. You could consider using an air purifier which helps clear the air of odors like this. I desperately wanted to use one but the plug in the bathroom where the cat box was would not work and I couldn't afford the larger model that would have cleaned the air for the whole living space. What I am talking about specifically is an ionic air purifier. They come in various sizes, but you should get one that is big enough to clean the air in the space that you live. I think that this will help a lot.

Better idea - Someone else mentioned charcoal. There are different types and some just work alot better. I have found the perfect product that I've used for years and know dozens of other people that use it. It is a product called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great. It works so much better than baking soda and all those sprays and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Also, alot of sprays have warning statements about being eye irritant. The carbon literally absorbs and eliminates the odors and works for a long time. Just clip one or two of these to the litter box. I use this product everywhere including car(smoke and pet smells), storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it. Someone else even said available in England. Definitely worth trying

I have a cat and I agree with Aimee. I have a covered box too and I also use Fresh step and clean it every day. No one knows I have a cat by the smell of the litter box. The same with the other cat I had back in the 80's. I love Fresh Step, In fact, this cat will not use anything else. He had surgery and wasn't allowed to use it and had to use newspaper clippings, and instead used my bathtub! I tried the vets stuff and the same thing. He would only use Fresh Step. Tells me something. It is worth a try.

PS I have a sensitive sniffer and I never smell it. Just make sure you clean it out every day.

I feel for you, i had the same problem and it was hard to keep it under control. I bought at wooden box to put the covered litter box in. I stopped using bags, and started to pour the litter directly in the tray, and I scoop morning and evening. I have 2 cats...so, imagine. I use arm and hammer with baking soda, and I add extra baking soda to quench the smell. I also bought a product called zero odor, that sort of helps, check
http://www.zeroodorpet.com/?gclid=CPq1rPu1kYsCFR0CPwodMFQxWA
I tried everything...but the best is consistency, clean twice a day, and change the whole litter every month (i keep adding after scooping, to replace the litter)...i hope it helps...For the wood box I bought one in ikea, that is meant to be a coffe table i think, but it has a top that you can lift, my bf carved a door on the side (see the HOL Storage cube). There is special furniture for cats, but is SO expensive, that we looked for alternative solutions. All this helped with the smell and we hide the litter box (we live in a small apt also).
I hope this idea helps you.

The best item to use for odor in the cat box is baking soda. Please mix it in (a little bit) the litter in the pan. Also, how often are you changing the litter, or emptying the container of collected litter? That is one thing that needs to be kept up. I have a regular, inexpensive (Wal-Mart) cat box, and I use expensive (pet store purchased, clumping) litter, and clean it outseveral times per day with a litter scooper. There is very little dust, and no real odor that I have noticed, except for sometimes, when my cat has gone potty, but it gets cleaned out quickly, therefore, no odor problem. Take care.

they make a pouder to sprinkle in the litter to help keep the smell down but one thing is to clean it often and when tossing it a way put it in a seprat bag and all so you can use a little bit of a spray called frebris dont spry it in the box just around it when the cat or cats come out of the box they tend to track some litter out of the box so that will help sweep it up and spray it works for me .. good luck

Only use a small amount of litter in the box, toss it and clean the whole thing once a day. Use some disinfectant wipes or a cheap bottle of disinfectant and spray it on, wipe it off, or just hot soapy water, rinse it off and refill.

If your'e feeding cheap food, change to a BARF (raw) diet or better quality, you will notice the difference.
