Mormons are encouraged to keep food supplies and incidentals in the event of disasters and other emergencies wherein they may be totally dependant upon themselves for survival.

We start with a 72-hour package of supplies and hope to build up to a two-year supply. In these latter days the world will undergo many more disasters such as Hurricanes Katrina and Rita that was recently experienced. Power outages for long durations and the inability to visit stocked stores for food may be out of the question.

Survival gear, as you indicate, might consist of cash, flashlights and batteries, portable radios and cell phones, non-perishable foods, independent heating sources, paper towels, TP, and other essential items that could mean life over death.

In my own situation, my Colt .45 stands ready for such emergencies too.

As a former member of the church, it is my understanding that it is so that you can be prepared for a natural disaster. This is done with common sense in mind, just as any other family would be urged to do regardless of religion or religious status, although members are encouraged to be prepared with at least a year or two's worth of non-perishable food as well as other miscellaneous items. The Mormon Church is not the only group to urge such practices, most common is the Red Cross, along with other social organizations, while yet at the same time, they do not urge people to be as well stocked (on a time basis).

My understanding is they are encouraged to keep one years worth of dried provisions in the home. I do not know for sure, but regardless, I do believe in respecting other peoples choices and beliefs. I also think I will map my neighborhood Mormons so I know where to go knocking when the power goes out! Don't feel left out Pagan Earthgirl, I will come knocking on your door for Bealtaine ;)

Not necessarily survival gear, but food storage. And it's not for some type of apocalyptic type event. It's to be prepared in case something happens....you know, tornados, floods, etc. (depending on where you live.) Not really a bad idea. Better safe than sorry I guess.

So many Mormons questions tonight. My dad had a gun cabinet, and we always kept a years supply of food and water. Plus Mormons are taught to know how to sew, make things from scratch (the women are), how to garden, and how to hunt. Almost like molisha men

We are told to keep 72 hour kits. The government tell people the same thing. Its incase of disaster, or a storm, or emergency so you can take care of yourself and your family.
