Its just the way you look at it.

You took $100.00 and then returned $2.00 so effectively you only borrowed $98.00 to begin with. Less $97.00 spent leaves $1.00 in your pocket.

The purchase is not relevant to the debt.

You owe $98. You have $1. How does this equate to $99 of debt? You have a $97 shirt and $1. Which means you owe $98.

Noooooo! This has been on here too many times. Okay here goes....

Just think about it this way:

The money you still owe Jeff and Jessica does not apply to your $97 purchase.

$97 +3= $100
