i think respect and compatibility, but you know most people go for love and sex nowadays...

Love and compatibility. Sex can just be a cover up in many relationships so it's important to have love first. I believe that you can have all the respect you want in a relationship but if you're not compatible it's more like two close friends than a real relationship.

I'm going with respect and compatibility also because those are intertwined with love. If you love someone, you respect them and are compatible with them. One trick to discovering what type of relationship two people are in is to remove sex from the equation. If they still want to be with each other, if they still love each other and respect each other, even though there's no sex involved, it is a sign of a wonderful, meaningful relationship. The sex should be an expression of all of that for each other. It should be one of the last - if not the last - part of forming the relationship. All of the other stuff comes first. All too often, though, a lot of people mistake sex for the other stuff and try to build the house from the roof down instead of from the foundation of love up.

Respect and compatibility should be what a relationship is based upon - when that's solid enough, the love and sex will naturally follow.
