xanax is not a sleeping pill. no never mix medication coz it will get your liver hurt.. try to get off pills .. i know it's very difficult but believe me it's the best thing to do.. i had the same problem, i stopped taking pills last week, had withdrawal syndromes but am OK now.. it was so very hard to do, so the best way is to keep someone beside you all this while. as for your sleeping problem, read "natural sleep secrets" by Martin Brock.. very very very good book, it worked from the first week i started reading it.
GOOD LUCK!!! my heart is with you coz I know exactly what you feel right now..

I dunno about that combination, my thinking is no, that is dumping one type of sedative-hypnotic onto another sedative hypnotic, and that seems like maybe overdose to me.
Sounds to me like you're panicking about not getting enough sleep, and that is just making things worse.
Here are my sleeping tips:
Google "sleep hygeine"
Go to bed and get up at the same time every day, even weekends.
Do only boring things that last hour before bed. no exercise, no computer time. Avoid bright lights.
Make sure your bedroom is totally dark, including covering up that digital clock and shutting the drapes/blinds/shades.
Exercising during the day will tire you out so you sleep well later.
Avoid caffeine like the plague. A morning cup of coffee is OK, but nothing after 1 PM or so. Some meds like cold remedies (sudafed, etc.) can ramp you up, too, look for the "agitation in children" label-some adults get trouble too,
Use a meditation tape, or guided imagery. Try a noise generator or CD of ocean waves or soft music to sleep if you live in the rackety city.
Don't use your bedroom for anything but sleep (or sex, if you are an adult). No computer, no TV, no reading in bed.
If these things don't work after a month or so, you may have depression interfering with your sleep, and you should screen yourself for that. there are online depression screening tests. Or there could be something else wrong. ***Don't take ambien, lunesta, etc. they are addictive and only work a week or so, then you're hooked and they aren't really helping anymore. (But you will get rebound insomnia if you quit). I did a lot of research on sleeping pills because I had a weirdo reaction to Ambien, and my impression was that most sleep disorders centers absolutely do not recommend prescriptions.****
Good luck! Google this topic and you will find some things I'm sure I forgot.

I haven't ever heard of anyone on 20mg of ambien, the highest doses I have seen or been on are 10mg of the regular and 12.mg of the ambien cr. I have a condition called Cyclic vomiting syndrome, where as I can take both meds when an episode hits. But again, I wouldn't take an additional 20 mg of ambien. Do a search on the drug and see for yourself.
