Not necessarily; some animals at shelters are on a "probationary" period during which they cannot be adopted. The quote you gave means that you cannot reserve a dog; the first person who gets there and says "I want that puppy!" is the one who adopts the lucky little dog. Hope that helps and good luck!

Usually shelters screen the potential adopting applicant. A lot of shelters even have temporary placements with the family that wishes to adopt the pet, before they allow the adoption to go through. First come first serve in this case should mean that if for example they have found a suitable family for the pet, and others happen to come in and ask to adopt that pet, that they will grant the adoption to the first suitable family that applied. It depends mainly on the rules and procedures that the shelter uses. Many shelters do not allow their pets to be adopted before they are spayed/neutered, yet will start looking for families for them right away. Try calling the shelter in question, they will be able to tell you if the animal you're interested in is still available, and if yes, when it will be able to go home.

Before adopting this type of dog do a lot of research on breed to make sure you are able to care for it properly, food, shelter. fenced in yard, Vet and vaccines.
Check with your local city ordinances, because in some towns you can not legally own a pit unless you have a hefty insurance policy.
First come, first serve.. if someone fills out adoption papers before you, they will get first chance at the dog...... Also means there could be a waiting period. They will check to see if you are compatible with the animal, and will only place the animal with you if it is in the best interest of the dog .
And to Tamara............ I am not bashing anything. Just stating facts in some towns!

That means it's first person there who wants to adopt them gets them. And therefore, all dogs shown may not be available.

That means that just because you see the dog on their website doesn't mean he'll be there when you show up to look at him. Someone might have already adopted him and they may not have updated their website yet.

I think you go there, and then they have to check you out - if you live in a rental they have to contact your landlord to make sure the dogs are allowed in your place.
In the meantime, that dog is as good as adopted by you, they won't give him or her to anyone else if you show up to pick them up on time.
I love pits, by the way, and am happy to hear you're thinking of adopting one. Sweetest and goofiest breed !
DON'T LISTEN TO ALL THOSE PIT BULL BASHERS BELOW !

well not always. you have to feel out paper work and get you house check before you can adopt any dogs. and you also have to make sure it will get along with any other dogs that might live with you or on you block.
