I am trying to find a replacement dog for my kids. We had a large dog (about 80 lbs). She died of old age, but she was the most wonderful dog, esp with the kids. I have a 4 yr old and a 13 year old. My husband works out of town a lot. Someone tried to break in on us while we were at home. My oldest is scared without a large dog in the house. I was wondering if I should get a mastiff. If so, what kind? I heard they were great with kids. Our other option is a lab/akita mix my son fell in love with at a rescue pound. Which would be best? If neither, what would you recommend? I want a dog that will stay in the house mostly, play with and protect the children, but not chew everything in the house. Our last dog was a walker/lab/bloodhound mix. Please help!

We have an english mastiff and recently adopted another mastiff. There are websites for mastiff rescue such as neomastiffrescue.com. Check them out as well before you decide. We adopted our second at one year old because we did not want to go through potty training again. It has worked out great. good luck.

you need to think about the Akita lab mix but I'm only saying that because his in the pond but you need to check his temperament they are sometimes aggressive if you fined he is not suitable a mastiff is a grate family dog /watch dog and they are good inside dogs but both will eat the furniture if they get bored an Akita lab probably will not get over 100 lbs an old English mastiff (which is what is referred to as a mastiff) will be at least 160 for a female and 180 for a male they can weigh as much as 200+ lbs my male weighs 135 and he is only 1 year old they keep growing until they are 3 he is real good with my kids they are 2 4 and 8 i hope this helps

lab akita should be fine..and if ur son likes it...they should bond great. I think if ur getting an animal for a kid(s) the kids should help in picking the pet to an exent ofcourse. you make the last call.. and any new dog might chew stuff for a while if allowed to in another home..just be sure to have good chew toys.
but in getting a new pet from a shelter it shows your kids that not all dogs are not lucky enough to have thier own bed..or family. and u get to save a life???
good luck in finding a new pet and sorry u lost a good friend.

If you saw a dog at the rescue, then you should definitely give that dog a shot at being what you're looking for.
