I don't know how someone got the impression he's intelligent and that you can ask him abstract questions about 'pressure in his forehead' or since when speaking one word by the age of four indicates that he is not autistic... all of that is a load of BS.

That said, it sounds like your cousin definitely has developmental delays, especially in language, but you didn't say enough to know about other things. But nothing you wrote screams out 'autism' to me. In fact, trying to please people so they won't say 'no' is more socially skilled than I would expect of an autistic child.

i am not a parent at all so i dont know about that. but i have a strong enough autism that i can see what the symptoms are very clearly... i do not believe he has autism. autism is where you have a disability with being social and speaking. the mere fact that he says one word shows his autism is NOT STRONG as least.

as for the way he acts, it sounds like nothing more than intelligence. i have a baby cousin who, before she could even speak, understood perfectly many things, she didnt have autism, but she is very intelligent for her age.

as for breathing complications that is not associated with autism in any way i can think of. it sounds more like he has a medical problem, or a physical disability and not a mental one like autism.

but since he is just 3 i would not notice anything about autism yet. there are many degrees of autism (mine is very strong but weak enough to fight "one on one"). and there are also very weak autism.

but if you are so worried about him being so autistic i would watch for these signs(they are strong signs of autism)

1. Rambing face into a hard surface over, and over, and over and...

2. not playing with other kids much and preffering to "sit on the side" and observe.

3. having EXTREME trouble with english, spelling, literature and that kind.

4. having a sense of logic and math far beyond his age.

since he is intelligent, if he does decide to ramb his face into a wall, ask him whether or not his forhead has a pressure of any kind, if he has a pressure in his forhead of any kind there is a huge chance of autism. (i dont want to get into details of why. that is)

It is a bit worrisome that he has so few verbal skills at this age. I would gently suggest that they mention his lack of vocab next time he is at the dr. He may also have hearing or learning problems so don't just say "I think he has autism" because a lot of parents freak out at that and deny it.
