Well the real issue is what do you want to increase it to and why? The explorer really should not be towing anything over 5000 lbs I recommend a maximum of 3500 lbs. It can be increased a little by adding stiffer springs etc but I personally would not recommend it. The other issue is the short wheel base as compaired to the trailer. Did you ever hear the expresion of the tail wagging the dog? The trailer will start to whip the explorer from side to side if the weight difference between the tow vehicle and the trailer is not better then about 15%

Your question does not contain much information, but the easiest way to increase towing capacity for any vehicle with an automatic transmission is to install an after market transmission cooler. Depending on what you plan to tow that may be all you need.

Like the other poster says, purchase a 4.6L V8 equipped Explorer with 4.10 axle ratio. You'll be paying a premium for the extra towing capacity in increased fuel consumption.

trade it immediately for a truck w/ a backbone. anything on a GMC lot would probably help. if that dosent help than be every careful. towing capacity of a vehicle is dependent on different issues the biggest being brakes. you need so stop the load your towing effectively. if its an occasional or one time heavy load --slow down, and lengthen your stopping distance. If your really going to be exceeding the manufacturer's recommended limits on a regular basis -- buy a truck that was built for the weight!

From what to ? The most cost effective way is to go to a lower (higher numerically) rear differential gear ratio. May sure you have adequate stopping, cooling, and suspension capacity also.

Are you using the bumper hitch? better get a real chassis hitch to start, then add load levelers, and a trans cooler. oh and some heavier rated tires
the trailer should have surge brakes, if not, you'll need electric trailer brakes
