Nicotine is actually addictive, so if someone has been smoking already, their bodies crave it. It's not necessarily an easy choice of leaving the cigarette alone. NEW smokers are being stupid. Maybe they crave attention and having people tell them they're killing themselves enhances their self worth b/c somebody noticed... Could be peer pressure too.

I have stared your post Honey because it is a simple question with awesome value! Yes! Why are people especially educated youngsters from influential homes so damn stupid??? I feel it is nothing but the need to be in the lime-light as it were, to be in with the crowd, a misguided sense of heroism etc. that draws people to do these things.

It's called addiction. Same reason for obesity, alcoholism, drug addiction. I'm sure it's not a new concept, and unless you, or someone you know has suffered from it, not saying anything is probably better than being 'above it all.' Same thing for heart patients that have bypass, and continue to do things harmful to their health, or people that get heart lung surgery and continue to smoke. ADDICTION is hard to beat!

Studies have shone that smoking cigarettes is as addictive to some people as cocaine is to others and just a difficult to beat.
I take it you care about someone who is a smoker and it's hurting you.
Don't ever put them down or call them stupid or nag at them ~~~ it will make their problem worse.
Just try to be a good and true friend and if they try to quit give them all the support you can.
Take Good Care of Yourself and may God bless and help the smoker.

For the same reason that i eat ice cream and other high-fat foods. Because i enjoy them. i know there are some folks who start smoking to be cool and then can't seem to stop easily, but there are those who, for reasons beyond my understanding, enjoy smoking.

Great quesition. All I can suggest is addictions have a real strong hold on people. In the past five years we have lost 3 people in our family to cancer - completely smoking caused. I hope my children have learned from it.
I hate drugs too.

Humans are pre-programmed to make a number of fatal mistakes.
I went to Thailand and saw a monkey smoking cigarettes. Why did the monkey smoke? Because nicotine is addicitve to primates. And we too are primates that's why people smoke. Our bodies are programmed to like smoking like they are programmed to "like" heroin or other addictive substances.
A similar question could be asked about other destructive behaviors.
Some dogs will eat to death if given an unlimited supply of food.
Why? Its a great question. I suppose it tastes good to them. Do you think they know that's its"bad" for them?
People's behaviors often lead to hurting themselves and others?
It's good though to learn self restraint and attempt to rise above animal instincts. Not everyone will get there.

I have smoked for years, and I have yet to witness a person dieing from smoking, but the side effects are great, falling asleep, dropping it,fire, another is candle burning, droppings or gets to hot, a fire, so what is the problem, recheck your causes in the eye sight way, not in the moral way.
