They seem to be able to reiterate what others have taught them, but not many seem to have their own personal opinions.

When your question is about politics, unless you are very close to them, they tend to plead ignorant. That is the safest bet and simply not to get themselves into trouble.
Once, I was in Tianamen Square and asked the travel guide about THAT incident many years ago. The reply was, "Incident? What incident? Never heard of that!"

In Asian culture, for thousands of years, the well-being of the group (family, work unit, school) has outweighed the personal opinion of any individual. It's just the way it is. They even have a saying "The nail that stands up gets pounded down". One's opinion and welfare are subservient to that of the group.

During the Communist revolution, people were encouraged to turn in their own friends, neighbors and family members for voicing any opinion that differed from the Communist party ideals. It made people very reluctant to express their true opinions on anything.

That has not been my experience. Maybe what you are experiencing is a lack of knowledge of the language. If you were to be able tounderstand their dialect of Chinese, they may have a lot of opinions.

It seems that your opinion is very biased for the largest population on the universe. Do you think that maybe even a couple of them could have some kind of opinion, or have you interviewed them all?

They have personal opinions, but their culture is very strong in supporting the needs of the group and family as opposed to those of the individual only. Kind of the opposite of the U.S. in many respects. I do see what you mean, though—it can seem like that to us.

Actually chinese people do have their own personal opinions. Everyone has their own personal opinions. Its just aht the chinese are more used to just not showing their opinions with others.

my wife is chinese, my in-laws are chinese, while in china i see the same things happening that happen in america. wifes and husbands argue, little kids still want an ice cream cone, young men and women hold hands and talk among themselves. they are no different than we are. people are people no matter where and they have opinions, just like you do...........

they do have personal opinions but i think with the way their govt are, controlling and such...they are not able to voice their opinion.
