I can only speak for my area by relating to you what our patients tell us.
Most emergency rooms do not have a dentist on staff.
The physician at the emergency room can not pull tooth or prescribe treatment. They can, however, write a prescription for antibiotics which are very important when it comes to managing toothache pain caused by infection. They can also write a prescription for pain medicine to help ease your pain until you can see a dentist.
The ER visit is much more expensive than a visit to a general dentist and not the best choice if there are other options available. However, if you wake up Saturday morning in horrible pain, it may be a good temporary solution.
Best wishes!

I'm not 100 percent sure, but my ex had a bad tooth and went to the emergency room. They examined him, gave him some pain killer and told him to see the dentist. So, I don't think hospitals do dental procedures. Emergency room visits are very expensive anyway. However, some larger cities often offer free dental services or services based on income and sometimes huge free dental clinics that last one day and are on a first come first serve basis regardless of income (Topeka does that once or twice a year). Look in your phone book or call the nearest SRS office and they should be able to give you some phone numbers. I hope that helps.

Some major hospitals will have a GPR on staff. For the most part GPR's work with people who have severe disabilities and need a bunch of things done in their mouth all at once and general anesthesia is almost always involved. For the most part general dentist do not work in hospitals. It is definitely not cheaper to get work done by GPR's. If you are concerned about finances, there are free dental clinics. They won't do anything fancy, but they will get you out of pain. Also you can go to a dental school, if there is one near you. But if you do go that route, understand you are going to be there about 3 to 4 times as long as private practice..

Generally the hospitals in the USA don't do dental work. Even in the case of severe trauma where the mouth is involved they typically call a dentist. ERs are for life threatening problems or severe pain. Tooth pain can certainly be severe but ERs will help with the pain and send you to a dentist.
