as embrassing as this is, i have a $43 library fine! it's been adding up all this time, it's one year and i never had the nerve to confront my parents about this issue... i cant ask them for this money because it's just way too much, they will get really angry and i dont have my own money right now.. i'm hoping to get hired when i'm soon going to give resumes... for now what should i do?! i dont want it to keep adding, is there any way i can tell the library that i will pay them sometime soon and ask them to not keep adding it? cuz i'm just in total shock and confusion, i know i have to pay but i dont know from what source!!!

Most libraries have a maximum fine of half the value of the item that's overdue. Most libraries also will often waive or reduce fines if you bring the item back in good condition and tell them you don't have the money. Library staff are pretty compassionate people and they usually give young people a break. If they reduce the fine and you still don't have the money, they'll usually allow you to pay part of it now and the rest over time; you probably won't be able to borrow anything, though, while you're paying it off. I've been working in libraries for more than 30 years and I see this same situation happen every single day. Believe me, we'd rather have the items back than hassle anybody for money they don't have.

Hun, If I were you, I'd fix it before they find out, because:
A.) You can't check books out (Duh.)
B.) If you are under 18, then your library card could be linked to your parents credit history. If your parents ever check their credit score, they will find out. Not only that, their score will be much lower. It's the same as not paying a house payment, or a credit card bill or what ever, even though it's just $41. If they ever wanted to get a mortgage, then they would pay a higher rate. They would spend thousands of dollars, because you didn't pay the fine. Think they will be mad at just $41 dollars?

Talk to the librarian. I ran into a sim. situation where I owed $36 in late fees. I went in a gave a "pity sob story" on why I was a month over due and gave them $5 on the spot. (which it is really hard to exclame why you are a month overdue) They ended up writing off the rest and never charged me anything else-nor did it show up on my credit report. However bewarned I have had friends who overlooked library bills, and they ended up going to a collection agency therefore it went on thier credit.
