you can do a few things.

(1) have the local post office hold your mail until you notify them of an address to send it to.
(2) get a p.o. box in nashville and have your mail forwarded there until you settle in with a permanent address
(3) put a mail forward order in at the post office, valid for 6 months, for whatever address you want your mail to go to.
(4) have someone at your current address gather your mail and send it to you (can be risky if bills don't make it in time)

The post office at the location you moved from can hold your mail for up to 30 days. When you do know your new address go to USPS.com and fill out a change of address online. All forwardable mail will be sent to your new address shortly thereafter.

Go to usps.com or call 1-800-ASK-USPS® - which is really (800) 275-8777.
Put your mail on hold. You can hold it up to 30 days. If it is more than 30 days then the postmaster (or their designated employee - usually the supervisor) can extend the hold. You can also do this at your local Post Office. Some Post Offices will accept holds over the phone but not all of them will because it is hard to verify who is calling.

When you have an address at your new city, you can go to usps.com and have your mail forwarded or you can go to your local post office and fill out a 3575 (Change of address form) or have your local carrier drop off the COA packet. You can call the 1 -800 and tell 'em to drop off the form at your new address.
Make sure you fill it out completely. If you are using the 3575 you need to sign it, you need to put in the correct apt number if you have one (old and new address). If you do it online I think they charge a dollar to your credit card, so you need a credit card.
Scanners now "read" you change of address and the letter sorting machines attempt to match up your change of address with your mail. Most of your letter mail will be forwarded to you by machines - not humans. If the mail gets to your old carrier, they will forward it to your new address.
Don't mix up the boxes - entire family vs individual. If you check off entire family then ALL mail that has your last name on it will be forwarded. That's OK if it is just you, but if you are moving out from a residence that you shared with a family member with the same last name, then they will not get any mail. You will get it all. :)
If check off individual then your first name will need to match up exactly. (William is not the same as Bill - Margaret is not the same as Peg) Also Jr. or Sr. should be designated if applicable.
Your priority, express and first class mail is forwarded for 12 months (not 6 months). From 12 months to 18 months the mail is returned to sender with your new address on the envelope. After 18 months the mail is returned to sender with the endorsement FOE or forwarding order expired.
Your periodicals (magazines) are forwarded for 2 months. Your standard mail (ahem - junk mail) is only forwarded if the mailer requests it by putting an endorsement on the mail - forwarding service requested.

Contact your nearest post office, but I believe you can have your mail held until you know a forwarding address.
