An urn is a container shaped like a vase. Sometimes it is used to store the ashes of a dead person who has been cremated (burned instead of buried). Other people use "urn" to mean a metal container used to boil tea or coffee. Depending on your son's maturity, the second definition may be more appropriate. "Urn" is pronounced (Errr-n).

Well just explain an urn to your son as a large container that can be glass or metal. Just like a coffee urn and so forth. I don't think I would try to explain an urn for cremation to my five year old. I know that would probably scare my daughter.

My answer to my kids would sound something like this:
An urn is a large vase with a lid, that would have really important things in it. It's usually decorated and painted to make it look nice, and sometimes you might find it in a special building called a tomb that's used after someone dies too keep some of their stuff in.

Chances are, they're teaching him how to spell "urn" so that he can spell other words such as "turn" and "burn". Right now, I can't think of any other words, but I'm sure there's plenty. Just tell him it's a container and then focus on other words that rhyme with it.

My question for you is "What grade is this for?" Certainly a kindergarten child is not being asked to learn the phonetic spelling of a word such as "urn."

as a teacher assistant for a elementary school I would tell him that it is a vase with a flat base or pedestal, or a metal container with a faucet, for making and serving coffee or tea. If his teacher has a problem with that definition tell him or her that it is in the dictionary. I hope this was a help.

Tell him that it's a vase with a cover that you put important things in, and you usually decorate it to make it look nicer. I wouldn't tell him about cremation yet, he's too young. Although considering his age, they're probably just trying to teach him how to pronounce other words like turn and burn.

urn is the container that you put someone's ashes in when they have died. Good luck on that one! Just tell him that it is a container.
