While the hair is wet, take a wide-toothed comb (NOT a brush) and start combing, from the bottom up. Do not try to comb from the scalp to the ends in one shot, it will just make things worse and more painful for her. By starting from the ends and gradually making your way up, you'll detangle more efficiently and with the least amount of pain possible.
Hope this helps!

Use a wide toothed comb on wet hair, also you can try a moisturizing hair lotion and a spray on detangler. Section hair into four or more parts, work tangles from the ends and work your way up, then go through the entire length of the strand with the comb to make sure the tangles are out. Make sure not to pull, or snatch the hair, that hurts like the dickens, be extremely gentle when working out knots or you could cause extreme breakage... Only comb hair when its wet, it'll make it easier to comb.

Comb while wet, work from then ends up are all good pieces of advice. A good moisturising conditioner will help make it less tangly.
