Why do I have to wait a year before joining the army? THen others that did worse things were allowed to join , either join or go to jail. I really want to join the navy or army and the army recruter told me I would have to wait a year, I haven't talked to the navy yet, the marines said they would take me if I wasn't on probation, but I don't want to join the marines.

Anyone know anything about this?

I worded wrong, Im not on probation right now, I will find out this week what my fines will actually be, no way probation will be a year, my crime was not that bad, I do have a good attorney, will she be able to get me out of probation if she says I'm going to join the military, because I have the money to pay whatever fines I get immediately. And that and probation seem to be the only thing holding me back from joining.

If you go the services websites you can do a live chat and find out right away. If you only have 1 DUI have you thought about just getting a lawyer?

Yeup. I know about it. What is it you expect the military to do for you? Give you a job driving heavy equipment, where other soldiers lives are at risk? Put you on the street of Baghdad with a gun in your hand, where you have to be alert, use good judgment, and again, maybe save the life of the soldier next to you? And why should they do this... because you're a nice guy? Give me a break.

The previous poster is correct... you can't change your sentence once you've been sentenced... The time to ask for military enlistment instead of jail was BEFORE you were sentenced. Oh... and that's not all so easy as it may sound. It still happens occassionally, but the defendant's have to provide proof that they actually DID enlist, successfully completed basic training, and are assigned to MOS training or PDS. If they fail to do so, the case is re-opened.

I would much rather have seen a question asking how to successfully complete your term of probation... or where to find a local AA meeting...

You answered your own question. You were charged with a crime, and either pled guilty or was found guilty. For your punishment, you were placed on probation for a year. probation means that if you violate the conditions of your probation, you will be sent to jail for the balance of your punishment. The other person, who you were talking about, was given the option of either joining the military or going to jail. If they chose the military, then their guilt or innocence is no longer in question. They would not be serving any time (per sa) if they join the military.

i dont know exactly what these other people did..but DUIs are taken very seriously by the military...ive known guys that had perfect military records and after 10 years + of service got pulled over barely over the limit and got dishonorably discharged. some other crimes that the civilian justice system rates as more serious arent frowned upon as much by the military. they arent gonna take anyone whos crime involves bodily injury(or potential injury in the case of a DUI) to another person to keep them from going to jail. As a military spouse i w holeheartedly agree with this as I wouldnt want my husbands life to come down to where it was in the hands of someone who was too immature to call a cab. Grow up take your punishment and move on.....if you wait a year stay out of trouble and still want in then by all means enlist, but be forewarned if you cant stay out of trouble in the outside world you wont cut it.

My hubby got deployed with a bunch of female soldiers because all his male soldiers have drug problems or got DUI's before deployments or articles 15's, so none of them could go. Imagine that.
