I know and I had this kind of feeling several times as well . I was born and raised in Sikh family and I am still a practising Sikh . I have several times doubted the veracity of all religions including mine and whether there even exists any such thing as God . But , I think just the attributes of God are just too wonderful . Maybe , thats why he is called "enticer of hearts" in scriptures . Whenever I look at people starving to death and naked people , I wonder for what are they being punished so severely , but then I can't say God is cruel or whether he even exists or not . What if God is nothing more than just an idea developed by humans ? Or What if he really does exist ? Maybe we will never know ? The feelings you get can be explained scientifically .

As I get older (only 32) I feel more of a desire for traditional church service. The fellowship is an important part of being a Christian. Jesus wants us to get together and talk about and serve Him. However, I do feel a very strong one on one friendship and kinship with God that I can't explain to anyone else. If you have it you just know. This was a very intersting question -- thank you for starting a great conversation!

I can't say I can define the relationship I have with God. His position in my life encompasses the position that can be filled by anyone, whether it be parents, friends, children, or significant others. He can't really be pigeonholed into one relationship type. That's what makes it so special.
To follow a religion means to ideally forge a relationship with the Divine. It can be a relationship of convenience, a relationship of fear, or a relationship of love. Relationships of love can also have many forms, or you can expand your view of the Divine to fit any existing material relationship.

I've heard people of his ilk before, "Christianity isn't a religion, it's a relationship with God" people.
They claim to not have a religion, but they're lying to themselves... they have a specific set of beliefs pertaining to a specific god derived from a specific scripture. That's a religion if I've ever heard it.
As for the 1-on-1 thing, it's nothing short of an ego trip of Biblical (pun intended) proportions. To think that the Creator of the Universe has a personal relationship with me and only me and loves me and watches over me and I am righteous in all I do because of Him, reeks of nothing more than pure, unadulterated arrogance.

Christianity is a one on one relationship with God. That is how we are supposed to have a relationship with God. But also to be a part of the church community. But a one on one relationship is how one gets close to God and that relationship gets stronger and more loving from both sides. That is how I lead my life one on one with God and part of the church community.

That is exactly how I feel. I know more about my own relationship with God than some priest does.

The bible says that there is one way to the Father, and it is by the son. Without the son, you do not have access to the Father.
My relationship with Jesus grows every day. I pray, I study God's word, I seek Him, I think about Him all the time.
I appreciate your friend's point of view....but if He truly wants to know the one, true, living God, He needs to know Jesus Christ.
