Well, for one thing, anyone who spends a great deal of time on chat lines obviously doesn't have time to do much reading. Also, they allow students to "get by" these days without really knowing how to spell, or even really read well. It's amazing how they let students graduate with so little knowledge of the basics and the world in general. 75% of the high school sophomores who participated in a recent survey in my city did not know the words to either the Pledge of Allegiance or the National Anthem. Not long ago I mentioned to a GROWN MAN that I was going to New England this summer to visit my brother. He looked at me...completely serious..and asked "New England? Now, is that different from Old England?" The man didn't even know that New England is in the U.S. !!!
