I found that having a destinaton wedding was so much more fun, and so reasonable on the pocket. We got married in Las Vegas at the Excalibur, and it was beautiful. We sent out save the dates a year before the wedding, and then sent out invites 6 months before the wedding, giving everyone a month to respond. We were surprised at the amount of people who flew out for the week. We got discounts on the hotel rooms, etc.. we had a wonderfully priced package deal with the hotel, and got a premier wedding package and reception. What we paid there for a beautiful, semi-traditional wedding was nothing compared to what I would have paid in my homestate.

There are sooooooo many places to get married. And so many ways.
You can have a lavish church wedding or just the couple (no witnesses are needed in Ohio) You can get married on a beach, ship (no captains can't marry you) winery, Art gallery, home, park, museum, the venue you're using for the reception.
You can have a destination wedding with others joining you or just the two of you with a big bash or a quiet dinner to celebrate when you return.

Sit down with your fiance & talk about what each of you HAVE to have to make this extra special to you; how you each have envisioned their wedding day. Work from there.

I'm traditional to the structure of weddings. I definitely think it should be in your home state w/ all of you and your hubby's family and friends. I also think you should have a traditional ceremony and then reception at a nice reception hall. But, that's just the way I see it.

Nothing is better than a hometown wedding, in the church you grew up in, with family and friends who know you well there to witness your vows at the ceremony, and then celebrate with you at the reception later. LOTS of brides who elope really regret it later (not the marriage, but not having family and friends there).

For me, it would have to be a kid friendly place where they're allowed to run around and have fun, like a park or garden. The Portland Rose Gardens in Oregon is a place that my boyfriend and I have tossed back and forth.

If family means something to you and you want them to be included I think you should have it locally where both your family and his family can join you without traveling distances. Also its easier to plan it when you dont have to deal with people that are 1,000 miles away.
