CNet has reliable list of freeware.
BE careful, sometimes when you try to download free anti-virus software from random sites--they are really viruses that you are downloading. That's why you have to go to a trusted site like CNet.com, which will link you to the real sites for the freeware.

Here is a free program from AOL. You don´t have to belong to AOL. Download their free Active Virus Shield, powered by Kerparsky Labs. Russia. Rated # 1 in the world for virus detection. They will ask you for your email address so they can send you a free registration key. You will get a background scanner and auto updates every hour on the hour.

Or you can download the free AVG antivirus program from Prague (Grisoft). You get auto updates, no background scanner.

Both use very little resources, especially the AVG. free antivirus.

Alwil Software provides a free version of their "AVAST" anti-virus software. The software has been rated 5 stars by CNET, was a Secure Computing 2006 finalist, and is ICSA labs certified.
The software also provides email and real-time file system protection. Updates are free, and are automatically downloaded by the system.
The software is free of charge to non-commercial users, and a 1 year license simply requires that you provide them with your email address (I have never gotten SPAM from them). Their tool is complete and fairly comprehensive, and stacks up well to most commercial solutions.
