I was so excited when I got it that I cashed it, and then I started thinking and realized that it was probably a scam. After doing some research I have found that it is a scam. What should I do now?

I hope you didn't spend the cash already. The bank will take the money right back out of your account once the check comes back as counterfeit. If you didn't spend the money, you need to redeposit the money back into your account and notify your bank.

I was nearly the victim of a similiar scam. I was asked to cash a check for $3000 and wire all but $350 to someone in Canada. I realized that this was too good to be true and asked my bank about it and they told me not to cash it.

If you have all or some of the money left, please take it back to the bank ASAP. The check will take about two weeks to bounce and the bank will go after you for the money. Banks almost never negotiate a settlement for this situation, and they'll want to see a police report before they even let you make payment arrangements.

Sorry!!!

Wow, Sam, I'm surprised you were able to cash it. If you cashed it at a bank you might have problems. I'd probably spend it because I (you) cashed it honestly (believing it was good), I'd spend the money on something big that I really need and couldn't otherwise afford, and then if pressed I would make arrangements to pay it back $50.00 a month. You cashed this check in good faith, I don't think you can be charged with a crime and the check writer should be liable for honoring the check. I'd spend it & pay it back in dribbles.

I also got a check yesterday for the same amount
from Bellfast, Ireland. I don't know what to do with it
either. Will probably trash it.

Slap yourself on your forehead.

And next time READ all of the "legalese" -- that would be little print on the check before negotiating a check received in the mail that you didn't request.

Go to a branch of your bank and talk to them. Quick.
